Tips for downloading and opening files

Downloading files from this site should be as simple as clicking on a link for a file where it appears on the page. Based on the file's type, often indicated by the end of its file name, e.g. .pdf, your computer should be able to determine what sort of software created it, and what software to open so that you can view the file.

In some cases, your computer may not have the appropriate software required to read file of certain types which you download from this site. If you experience that problem, the list below might help - you might find that a variety of different software applications can read the file you've downloaded. For almost every file type and for almost every desktop computer operating system (the main ones are Microsoft Windows, Mac OS X, and Linux), you will find cost-free open source software available for download - see the links below.

  • Files ending with doc, xls, ppt and pps can be opened with any version of Microsoft Office, or free packages like Open Office (MS Windows and Linux) or Neo Office (Mac OS X).
  • Files ending in docx, xlsx, pptx, etc. can only be opened with MS Office 2007. Earlier versions of MS Office and other office applications cannot open these files. We recommend against uploading this file format, as only a small proportion of site visitors are using MS Office 2007.
  • Files ending in odf, ods, odt, odp, etc. conform to the Open Document Format ISO standard and can be opened with any ODF-compatible software. Examples are Open Office, Lotus Symphony, and Neo Office. Unfortunately Microsoft have chosen not to support the ODF open standard. Consequently, MS Office will not read these file types.
  • Files ending in pdf can be read with any Portable Document Format compatible reader. Examples include Adobe Reader (MS Windows, Mac OS X, Linux), and a variety of free packages including Sumatra (MS Windows), Preview (Mac OS X), and Evince or KPDF (Linux).

Please note: some large files or groups of files have been compressed into "Zip Archives" to make them easier for you to download. After downloading a Zip file, you can view the original file or files contained within the compressed archive with any utility capable of "unzipping", like 7-zip.
